Welcome center critics are right
I am writing in support of the letter written by Mary Joan Hoene that appeared in the April 4 edition of The Daily News. Ms. Hoene implored the Preservation Society of Newport County trustees to “do the right thing” about the welcome center to be located at The Breakers. The letter cut through the talking points of the Preservation Society and what its mission is by pointing out that the management of the society is only interested in the enhancing their “brand” and paying themselves large salaries rather than caring about historic preservation.
As the City Council wrestles with ways to increase revenues for the city, why not add a $1 surcharge to the tickets sold for the viewing of the mansions? As Councilwoman Kathryn Leonard said about a proposed addition to the meals tax, who is going to notice the difference? This surcharge would not be subject to the review of the legislature and would add approximately a million dollars to the city without any added costs.
